Pharmacists work in an exciting profession characterized by natural sciences. Here they take on responsibility for advising the population on pharmaceuticals or take part in the research and development of new drugs. General information about studying pharmacy

In the pharmacy course you deal with Chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics and medicine. The reputation of being difficult and strenuous precedes the course. There is definitely some truth to it, because right at the beginning of your studies you will be faced with challenging and learning-intensive content. These are largely the same from university to university, because pharmacy is a centrally organized course in which you three exams on the way to the state examination graduate.

You can do pharmacy by now also on Bachelor and Master study, then receive but no approval as a pharmacist. So this path is only recommended if you already know that you want to work in research, industry or administration.

The pharmacy course lasts eight semesters (longer studies are widespread) and is then followed by a practical year. In the first four semesters, the basic course, you will deal with all areas of the natural sciences: Chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology. This part of the course concludes with the first section of the pharmaceutical exam, a written exam. During your undergraduate studies, you will also complete yours Clinical traineeship. During this internship, you will spend four weeks in a public pharmacy and four weeks in a pharmaceutical office of your choice.

In the main course you will then deal with Pharmaceuticals. Here too there is one at the end Partial examination of your state examination, this time an oral examination.

You have now completed your studies and are going to practical year. As in the clinical traineeship, the first half of the year takes place in a public pharmacy and the second half in a pharmaceutical area that you can choose. At the end there is another exam. If you successfully complete this, you will receive your license to practice as a pharmacist.

To study pharmacy, you need good grades or a few semesters of waiting. 20 percent of the study places in pharmacy are allocated centrally via the NC and via the number of waiting semesters. Here you compete with other applicants from your state. Accordingly, the NC varies from state to state. In the past few years he was depending on the semester and federal state between 1.0 and 2.4.

It tends to be higher in winter semesters because there is more competition with the fresh graduates than in summer. However, the other 60 percent of the available study places are allocated by the universities themselves. The NC also plays a role here, but it is not the only criterion.

The application for a study place in pharmacy is made centrally via If you are unable to get a place at a university based solely on your NC or the number of semesters you have been waiting, other factors also play a role. This includes Individual grades in the Abitur (mostly German, math and chemistry), yours Performing in the medical test, an eventual Vocational training and activity, yours Location preference regarding the college and a Selection interview.

What is also to be added for the first time in the 2020 winter semester is the newly developedStudy aptitude test for the pharmacy course, shortPhaST. This is a cognitive test lasting just under four hours that tests your knowledge and skills, which are particularly important for a pharmacy degree. In addition to the other criteria already mentioned, it should become a meaningful factor in the selection process and will initially be used by the Universities of Tübingen, Freiburg and Heidelberg. The aim is to use the test at other universities in the future.

Pharmacists work in the development of medicines and the responsible supply of them to the population. Pharmacists rise usually with a salary in the 3,000 range gross per month. With increasing professional experience this can still to be doubled. Average is the merit of a pharmacist around 4,500 euros.

Master, diploma and doctorate
