Waitress is a good job for teenagers
Working from 14, 15, 16 - which jobs are suitable?
Work from 14, 15 or 16 years of age. Many young people want to earn money early. You can find out what is allowed and which jobs are suitable for it here.
Most teenagers need more money than their parents can safely afford to give them as pocket money. Often the parents cannot give more than they are already doing, because they too have desires and needs. However, young people have the opportunity to earn money by looking for a part-time job. If they are employed, however, they must observe the provisions of the Youth Employment Protection Act (JArbSchG).
Work from 14
You can only start an apprenticeship or get a permanent job from the age of 15. This limit also applies to part-time jobs. Those who already work at the age of 14 are subject to an exception and can either use the Agriculture or as Newspaper delivery work. The best thing to do with every application is to ask in advance by phone or email whether the position is also suitable for a 14-year-old. The employer will know this and will be happy to provide information.
An alternative would be Tutoring, for example for elementary school pupils or younger pupils at their own school. However, the prerequisites are very good grades and a certain degree of maturity, as this is how you become a teaching person and also have to gain respect.
Work from 15
15-year-old adolescents are allowed to join slightly employ to let. That means they can accept any job that is remunerated on a € 400 basis. They are also allowed to start an apprenticeship, as it can be assumed that they have at least obtained their secondary school diploma at this age and that the school is thus provisionally completed.
»Work from 15 - working hours
For work from the age of 15, the JArbSchG stipulates that employment may only take place between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Pupils must include in their employment contract that they may only be employed if there are no school obligations in the way of their work - the school takes precedence at all times. Additional working hours are not allowed! If the young person is called to work in an emergency, these working hours must not ensure that he works more than agreed - so he has another date off.
»Working from 15 - break regulations
Breaks are also required by law: after 4.5 hours at the latest, a break of half an hour must be taken. If the young person is on site for more than 6 hours, the break must last 60 minutes. It takes place at least one hour before the end of work. Young people are not allowed to work on Sundays and public holidays - but here too, as is so often the case in life, there are some exceptions.
Work from 16
A 16-year-old young person can be employed in the same way as a 15-year-old. The additional year does not change anything, at most the possibilities in the context of school activity. Of course, the school also takes precedence over a 16-year-old. As a rule, 16-year-olds are very happy to be hired because they are already a little more independent and can manage their time well. You can also tutor other teenagers as they have the necessary maturity. However, even a 16-year-old must comply with the JArbSchG and thus does not differ significantly from a 15-year-old who is already working.
Working from 14, 15, 16 - suitable jobs
In principle, any job that can also be carried out as a minor activity on a € 400 basis is suitable. Young people find work, for example
- as a newspaper deliverer,
- as assistants in the catering industry,
- at events,
- as service staff (dishwasher, waiter),
- in the supermarket
- at the cleaners,
- in the call center,
- in agriculture,
or in other companies that do not necessarily only need skilled workers. You can of course try to apply to a doctor, lawyer or your favorite shop, for example, but whether you will be accepted there or whether there is a suitable job at all is questionable.
