Country code: dial the correct number when roaming

Country code and international number format
Image: Sergej-Khackimullin - Fotolia.com Whether a call on vacation, on a business trip to your home country or from home abroad - there are a few details to consider when entering the phone number when roaming as well as international calls. If you want to call Germany from abroad, you have to add the German country code +49 to the known number in advance and omit the 0 of the respective area code. For example, the Berlin number 030 1234567, which is valid in Germany, would become +49 30 1234567 abroad.

The same rules apply to the numbers in your phone book if you want to use them abroad. Therefore, it generally makes sense to save phone numbers in international format: If you are traveling abroad, you do not have to laboriously change them, and in Germany, dialing including your own country code does not incur any additional costs.

Background: The international number format

Country code and international number format
Image: Sergej-Khackimullin - Fotolia.com Every country in the world has its own international telephone code ("country code") which the caller must dial in order to establish an international telephone connection with the respective country. For most countries, this area code consists of two or three digits. The shortest country codes are +1 belonging to the so-called North American Numbering Plan (NANP) and +7 belonging to the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan.

In order to establish an international connection, a so-called traffic elimination number (VAZ) must be dialed before the country code, which can only be replaced by the plus sign in mobile communications. Such a traffic elimination number is also used for domestic long-distance calls: The zero with which area codes always start is actually a VAZ, which indicates that a long-distance call is desired and that the long-distance exchange is therefore required. The VAZ for international calls in this country is 00. That is why international telephone numbers are occasionally given with two leading zeros, i.e. around 00 49 for Germany.

The 00 doesn't work everywhere

Like many other countries, Germany is following the recommendation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to use 00 as the VAZ for international calls. For example, if the caller wants to call Greece, he dials 00 to get to the international area and 30 as the country code for Greece. This works from the German landline network as well as from the cellular networks.

However, not all countries adhere to this system. In Canada and the USA, for example, VAZ 011 must be dialed so that the connection runs through the international exchange and a country code can be entered - unless the call is made in a cellular network. In mobile communications, the plus sign is valid internationally as a placeholder for the traffic elimination digits.

In the box below you will find a list of all international country numbers. The countries have been assigned to the respective continents and are in alphabetical order. As an alternative, we also offer you a direct country code search.
