Traveling on Indian Railways can be daunting and confusing for the uninitiated and inexperienced. Reservation is not easy and there are many abbreviations and travel classes.

The answers to these basic questions and answers will help you make it easier.

What is the advance booking period?

This is how far in advance tickets can be booked. With effect from April 1, 2015, it was increased from 60 to 120 days. However, the increase does not apply to certain express trains, such as the one Super Fast Taj Express that have shorter pre-reservation times.

The advance booking period for foreign tourists is 365 days. However, this only applies to 1AC, 2AC and Executive travel classes on Mail Express trains and Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Gatimaan and Tejas trains. The facility is not available for travel in 3AC or sleeper classes. Your account must have a verified international cell phone number.

How can I make an online reservation?

Indian Railways requires long-distance train reservations for all classes of accommodation except second class. Online bookings can be made through the IRCTC Online Passenger Reservation website. However, travel portals like Cleartrip.com, Makemytrip.com and Yatra.com also offer online train bookings. These websites are much more user friendly, but they do have a service fee. Please note that it is only possible to buy six tickets per month online from one user ID.

Can foreigners make online reservations?

Yes. As of May 2016, foreign tourists can reserve and pay for tickets on the IRCTC website using international cards. This is being made easier by Atom, a new online and mobile payment platform. However, foreigners must have an account that has been verified by Indian Railways. Previously, this involved a tortuous process, including emailing passport information. However, foreigners can now register online immediately on the IRCTC website using their international cell phone number and email address.

An OTP (One-Time Pin) is sent to the cell phone number for verification, and a registration fee of 100 rupees. You can find out how to do it online. Cleartrip.com also accepts many international debit and credit cards. It doesn't show all of the trains though.

How can foreigners buy tickets at the train station?

The main train stations in India have special ticketing offices called International Tourist Bureaus / Passenger Reservation Centers for foreigners. A list of stations with these facilities is available online. The at New Delhi Railway Station is open 24 hours. Don't listen to anyone who tells you it's closed or moved. This is a common scam in India. You will need to show your passport when booking your tickets.

How can foreigners make reservations under the Foreign Tourist Quota?

Set aside a special quota for foreign tourists to make sure they are able to travel on popular trains that get booked up very quickly. Previously tickets within this quota can only be booked in person at an international tourist office in India. Indeed A new policy was introduced in July 2017 that allows foreigners to make bookings under the Foreign Tourist Quota on the IRCTC website an account with a proven international cell phone number. Such bookings can be made 365 days in advance.

The price of the tickets is higher than under the general quota though. And the Foreign Tourist Quote is only available in 1AC, 2AC and EG. After logging into the IRCTC website, click on the "Services" option on the left side of the menu at the top of the screen, and select "Foreign Tourist Ticket - Reservation". More information here.

What are the classes of the trip?

Indian Railways has numerous classes of travel: Second Class Unreserved, Sleeper Class (SL), Three Tier Air Conditioning Class (3AC), Two Tier Air Conditioning Class (2AC), First Class Air Conditioning (1AC), Air-conditioned Chair Car (CC) and second class seats (2S). To be comfortable, it is important to choose the class that works best for you.

What are Tatkal tickets and how can they be booked?

Under the Tatkal scheme, a certain contingent of tickets will be set aside for purchase the day before the trip. It is useful when unexpected excursions have to be taken or where the demand is heavy and it is not possible to get a confirmed ticket. Tatkal cards are available on most trains. However, there are additional costs, so the tickets are more expensive. Fees are calculated as 10% of the base rate for Second Class and 30% of the base rate for all other classes, subject to a minimum and a maximum.

Passengers can make Tatkal bookings at the stations that have a facility or online (follow these steps to book online). Bookings for travel in air-conditioned classes open at 10am the day before departure. Sleeper Class bookings starts at 11 a.m. Tickets sell out quickly and can be hard to get when to, and the Indian Railways website has been known to crash due to congestion.

What does RAC mean?

RAC means "reservation against cancellation". This type of reservation allows you to get on the train and guarantees you to sit somewhere - but not necessarily somewhere to sleep! Berths will be allocated to RAC holders if a passenger with a confirmed ticket cancels their ticket or does not reappear.

What does WL mean?

WL means “List Wait”. This facility enables you to book a ticket. However, you are not accepted to board the train unless there are enough cancellations at least RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) status.

The demand for better food has resulted in the launch of an independent grocery delivery company that has partnered with local restaurants. You can pre-order groceries (either by phone, online, or using an app), and have the restaurant package and deliver it to your seat. Indian Railways has started to introduce a similar service called e-catering.

What is an Indrail Pass and how can I get one?

Indrail passes are available for overseas tourists and are an inexpensive way to visit multiple destinations in India by train. Pass holders can travel as much as they want, without restrictions, across the entire Indian Railways network, within the validity of the pass. You are also entitled to tickets under the Foreign Tourist Quota. Cards are available for 12 hours up to 90 days. They can only be obtained through selected agents overseas in Oman, Malaysia, UK, Germany, UAE, Nepal and Air India branches in Kuwait, Bahrain and Colombo.
