Transferring files between your PC and devices using iTunes

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 or later, or an iPad, you can use iTunes to transfer files between your computer and device using apps that support file sharing. This is useful for. For example, to transfer files created on your device to your computer or to take files with you and use them when you do not have access to your computer.

Transfer files between your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and your computer

  1. Connect your device to your computer.

    You can connect your device with a USB or USB-C cable and via WiFi. For more information about how to enable syncing over Wi-Fi, see Sync iTunes content on PC with devices over Wi-Fi.

  2. In the iTunes app, click on the PC, click the "Device" button in the upper left corner of the iTunes window.

  3. Click on "File Sharing".

  4. In the list on the left, select the app on the device that you want to transfer a file to or from.

    For more information about supported apps, see the documentation for your apps.

  5. Do one of the following:

    • To transfer a file from your computer to your device: Click "Add", select the file you want to transfer and click "Add".

    • To transfer a file from the device to your computer: Select the file you want to transfer from the list on the right and click on "Save as". Then select the desired storage location for the file and click on "Save as".

The file will be transferred to your device or saved in the specified location on your computer.

The file can be opened on your device with the app that you selected in step 4.

Remove the transferred file from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Connect your device to your computer.

    You can connect your device with a USB or USB-C cable and via WiFi. For more information about how to enable syncing over Wi-Fi, see Sync iTunes content on PC with devices over Wi-Fi.

  2. In the iTunes app, click on the PC, click the “Device” button in the upper left corner of the iTunes window.

  3. Click on “File Sharing”.

  4. Select the file to be deleted from the list on the right under “File sharing”.

  5. Press the backspace key and click "Delete".

Important: Before you disconnect the device from the computer, click the "Eject" button .
